Yellow or Red (If the sensor wire (3) is yellow, then this one will always be red.) How to connect fans to the motherboard Pin Number Let’s go over each type, and you will see how they should be connected depending on the type of connection. There are a few common types of fan connections that are used today. Don’t be afraid to geek out a little and compare noise in relation to airflow volume between various models and makes under their respective specifications area.Larger fans are better for reduced noise as they don’t need to spin as fast for reasonable airflow, reducing noise, especially at idle.Fans with only three wires aren’t as easy to control as those with four.So try and opt for something well-known, or that has received good reviews. Cheap fans may not last very long and may produce more noise.Choose the correct size for what your case can accommodate. If you don’t have your fans already and still need to purchase some, there are a few things to consider. Now that’s out of the way, let’s look at how you can connect more fans to your PC. Important: Always make sure that your computer has been turned off and isn’t connected to power before connecting or disconnecting any fans. This can lead to poorer cooling than you had before adding new ones, and I’m sure that wouldn’t have been the desired outcome from anyone. How To Connect Fans To A PCĪdding fans facing the wrong way or situated incorrectly inside a computer case could detract from your system’s overall cooling strategy. This is a handy first step to understanding before adding more fans. Our other article about PC airflow optimization discusses how you should set up the airflow and air pressure type. Cases generally provide more than enough mounting areas, so you don’t have to worry about your computer overheating. With most computer cases today, adding more fans is easy enough for most people. Not only do the connection types differ, but how you install them is also important. So even if it's not a top rated fan, hell, again, I suspect it will serve just fine.We will cover everything you need to know about how to connect more fans to your PC. IIRC there's one other brand-new 120mm x 120mm x 30mm fan that also does well but I forget what it is and can't find the make or model at the moment.Īnd finally, I have piles of the stock Fractal Design Dynamic X2-series case fans here as pulls from stock Fractal Design cases in both 120mm and 140mm sizes, and we use plenty with no complaints. If you can fit slightly thicker 30mm thick fans instead of the standard 25mm thickness in your use case, the Phanteks T30-120 reviews well. Again my data is grossly insufficient here. I would avoid the Arctic Cooling F12 PWM, I have insufficient data for reliability on them but my too-small-a-sample-size-to-be-useful suggests a higher failure rate than I would like. ![]() ![]() I am not as familiar with the Phanteks PH-F120MP but for a more affordable 120mm fan that supposedly is good enough- the TechPowerUp review I linked below covers almost all of the fans mentioned so far. The Corsair ML120 Pro seems to perform similarly at a similar price point to the be Quiet! Silent Wings 3. ![]() The be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 is also extremely well regarded but is also a premium priced fan (even if it is still a good bit cheaper than the Noctua NF-A12 PWM). Noctua NF-A12 is largely regarded as the best fan money can buy, but they're pricey and honestly most people- even discerning enthusiasts- can have an understandably hard time justifying the price. ![]()
